{"id":3835,"date":"2026-07-29T07:37:29","date_gmt":"2026-07-29T07:37:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.colang.uobaghdad.edu.iq\/?p=3835"},"modified":"2026-07-29T07:37:29","modified_gmt":"2026-07-29T07:37:29","slug":"languages-college-discusses-a-masters-thesis-on-interpreting-english-drug%e2%80%91related-memes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/en.colang.uobaghdad.edu.iq\/?p=3835","title":{"rendered":"Languages College Discusses a Master\u2019s Thesis on Interpreting English Drug\u2011Related Memes"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"wpb-content-wrapper\"><p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 17px; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><strong>Languages College Discusses a Master\u2019s Thesis on Interpreting English Drug\u2011Related Memes<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 15px; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">The Department of English at the College of Languages, University of Baghdad, discussed the master\u2019s thesis submitted by <em>Omar Rabee Mohammed Dahham<\/em>, titled: <strong>\u201cA Pragmatic\u2011Network Analysis of Extended Imagery in English Drug\u2011Related Memes and Their Interpretation by Iraqi EFL Learners.\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 15px; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">The thesis aimed to analyze the structure of English memes related to drugs and addiction from a pragmatic\u2011network perspective, examining their textual and visual components and exploring the role of culture in interpreting them. It also sought to assess the ability of English\u2011language students at the College of Languages to understand these memes, identify linguistic and cultural barriers that hinder comprehension of their implicit meanings, and indirectly raise students\u2019 awareness of the dangers of addiction and how memes may oversimplify or downplay the seriousness of the issue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 15px; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">The study adopted a mixed\u2011methods approach combining qualitative and quantitative analysis. Twenty memes addressing drugs and addiction were analyzed, followed by a quantitative analysis of responses from fifty Iraqi EFL learners. The results indicated the dominance of cognitive\u2011frame\u2011based incongruity and the central role of imagery in constructing and interpreting meaning. After extensive discussion, the committee recommended accepting the thesis after making the required revisions within one month.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 15px; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">The examination committee consisted of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 15px; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">Prof. Mahdi Inayah Kareem \u2013 Chair<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: 15px; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\">Asst.
