Department of Turkish
Turkish language teaching began in Iraq at the Higher Institute of Languages in 1963, as it included three oriental languages: Turkish, Persian, and Hebrew. This institute was merged with the Faculty of Arts in 1969, and then it was named the Department of Oriental Studies in the academic year 1971–1972.
The idea of establishing an independent department for teaching the Turkish language began in 1970. Because of its importance and originality, this idea proved successful in the academic year 1972-1973, when only four students were accepted in the first session.
The Department of Turkish in the College of Arts was able to graduate a large number of translators and professors who contributed to the establishment of a prestigious department in a college specialized in the study of languages, which is the College of Languages. To start the scientific and educational mission, a master’s study was started in the academic year 1992-1993 and a doctoral study in 1994-1995, and he was able to achieve the ambition of those who wanted to increase their knowledge of the Turkish language by opening the evening study department in 1994-1995.
The Department of Turkish has provided the offices and various sectors with qualified translators.
Goals
- Supporting government organizations and others with specialized staff in Turkish language and translation
- Arranging summer language development programs at the corresponding departments of foreign colleges abroad.
- Allocating academic positions in the corresponding departments abroad for exceptional candidates to complete postgraduate studies
- interacting with the relevant academic institutions both inside and abroad in order to take part in research meetings and seminars.
- encouraging excellent academics to do scientific research, hold conferences both inside and abroad, and arrange seminars in order to promote the effective communication.
