DEPARTMENT OF FRENCH

The Department of French was founded with the establishment of the College of Languages and continued under the name of the Higher Institute of Languages in 1958. The department continued after the institute was converted into a college and then merged with the College of Arts in the late 1960s in the branch of European languages. The Faculty of Languages was re-established in 1987, and the French language department became one of its important departments. Evening studies started in the academic year 1994-1995, during which hundreds of students graduated. In the spring of 1992, the department discussed the first master’s thesis in French literature awarded by an Iraqi university. The department then established postgraduate programs for the first time, including a master’s degree in French literature for the academic years 1993–1999 and a higher diploma in translation for the years 1995–1996. Following a more than 14-year hiatus, postgraduate programs are once again accepting students for the 2018–19 school year. Along with interpreting official documents that are sent to the Consulting Office for Foreign Languages and Translation, the department coordinates continuing education courses in French in conjunction with the Consulting Office for Languages and Translation. The department also assesses academic work in the field of French received from other universities.
