Overview, Vision and Mission of the Departments of the College of Languages (Graduate Studies)

 

Department of the English Language

Master’s studies were opened in the English Department in the academic year of 1993-1994. In the academic year of 1998-1999, it was approved to separate linguistics from literature in the department, so that each was an independent branch; the degree became a master’s degree in literature and a master’s degree in language. Due to the urgent need to prepare translators in the English language specialty, a higher diploma study in translation was launched in the department in the academic year of 1995-1996. In the academic year of 2008-2009 a master’s study in the translation specialty was introduced in the department as well.

Vision and Goals

The English Language Department aims to prepare students capable of working in various fields of language, such as teaching, translation, or academic research, as well as able to compete in the labor market. The department and its teaching staff for postgraduate students aim to provide students with various linguistic and academic skills and to enrich their academic experience with what is modern in the field of linguistics, literature and translation. The department also attempts to ensure that students’ research, projects, and dissertations are diverse dealing with important academic topics that contribute to developing and benefiting society and enriching the academic research.

 

Department of the Russian Language

Introduction

The Department of the Russian Language at the College of Languages/ the University of Baghdad offers academic specializations to graduate qualified and trained cadres to advance the development of the country and the rapid scientific and academic developments in the world in the field of languages. Accordingly, Master’s study was launched in the Department of the Russian Language in 1992. The Department of the Russian Language seeks to qualify students specialized in the Russian language to achieve a rapprochement between the Russian-speaking peoples and the Arab world, with the qualifications that enable them to teach the language, culture, and literature of the Russian-speaking peoples. These efforts will be reflected positively in a rapprochement of peoples, the dialogue of cultures, and strengthening of relations at all levels. Therefore, one of the main goals that the Master’s Program in the Russian Language aspires to achieve is to graduate students capable of working in various fields, especially in the fields of education, communications, diplomacy, and translation.

The Objectives of Master’s Degree Study in the Russian Language Department

1- Enabling students to become familiar with the latest developments of linguistic field, such as translation theory, linguistics, contemporary Russian language, linguistic analysis, and methods of writing research. On the other hand, students will have the opportunity to master a complex of disciplines representing a system that forms methodological skills and abilities for Russian language teaching and translation activity.

2- Graduating students with a good level of competence having the ability to teach the Russian language and to work in the field.

3- Preparing students to continue research and study to obtain a doctorate degree in the Russian language.

4- Developing students’ research skills in the fields of linguistic and translation studies.

5- Providing students with the basic theoretical principles of the main trends in contemporary linguistic studies.

 

The Department of the Persian Language

Vision

The Department of the Persian Language at the College of Languages aspires to open horizons in the field of teaching and research in the Persian language and its literature locally and regionally and to provide integrated education in the Persian language and its literature.

Message

The mission of the Persian Language Department is to advance the intellectual, cultural and educational level of students by developing their linguistic, intellectual and research skills to meet the requirements of the labor market. It also provides distinguished graduates to serve their country and the region and to prepare researchers capable of keeping pace with scientific progress through academic research. The department aspires to serve different communities by encouraging dialogue, understanding and communication between cultures internally and externally and keeping pace with the rapid changes and developments.

Objectives

1- Developing student’s linguistic and communication skills through the latest technical means.

2- Providing students with comprehensive knowledge of the Persian language, literature, linguistics and translation.

3- Conducting theoretical, experimental and comparative research in the field of the Persian language, literature and translation.

4- Refining student’s critical and creative thinking skills.

5- Studying applications of modern technology in the Persian language, linguistics and translation.

6- Building partnerships with the public and private sectors by conducting studies and providing consultations in the field of specialization.

7- Encouraging critical understanding of the thought and cultures of the Persian-speaking world and opening channels of dialogue with Persian-speaking nations.

8- Preparing specialized staff in the Persian language and literature.

9- Preparing well-qualified personnel to work as translators in state departments.

Serving the Arabic language and literature through:

A – Showing the role of Arab genius in the emergence of the Persian literature and its impact on the development of literary models in the Persian language.

B- Translating the well-known Arabic works into the Persian language.

T – Translating the well-known works in Persian literature into the Arabic language and enriching the Arabic library with these valuable works.

D- Conducting comparative linguistic and literary studies between the Arabic and Persian languages.

C- Showing the historical links between the Arabic and Persian languages.

 

The Department of the Hebrew Language

Vision

Excellence and leadership in the postgraduate program, Master’s in Hebrew – linguistics, in order to obtain a corresponding rank of the departments of Hebrew in Arab countries and the world.

Message

Upgrading the postgraduate program/MA in Hebrew – Linguistics to keep pace with global academic trends and developments in the field of academic research and to develop linguistic studies and keep pace with their modern curricula.

Objectives

1- Providing graduate students with the skills of linguistic analysis of written literary and political texts and speeches spoken in Hebrew according to modern linguistic analysis methods.

2- Teaching graduate students the skills of writing and preparing university theses by following modern academic research methods.

3- Graduating highly skilled cadres in the field of translation from Hebrew to Arabic and vice versa.

4- Instilling moral values and principles of academic honesty in conducting university research and dissertations for postgraduate students.

5- Providing institutions in our dear country with academic and research capabilities that are able to comprehend language and employ it in the specialty of the Hebrew language.
