Master’s thesis at the College of Languages explores the impact of religious context on the metaphorical meanings of Prepositions

The Department of English Language at the College of Languages, University of Baghdad, discussed a master’s thesis entitled (A Cognitive Linguistic Approach to the Metaphorical Meanings of Prepositions in English and Arabic Religious Texts) by graduate student Sahar Nihad Mohammed Abd Ali.

The thesis aims to clarify how prepositions convey metaphorical meanings and identify the types of meanings they express, in addition to examining the impact of religious context on the metaphorical aspects of these prepositions. The study reveals that the metaphorical use of prepositions stems from various cognitive conceptualisations, resulting in distinct representations of spatial, temporal, and material relationships. The researcher concludes that both languages utilize image schemas in forming abstract meanings, though they differ in the flexibility and frequency of prepositional extensions. The committee recommended the researcher to consider the feedback provided during the discussion.
