Master’s Thesis Discussion on the Challenges of Translating Football Idioms from Spanish into Arabic at the College of Languages
The Department of Spanish at the College of Languages, University of Baghdad, held the defense of the master’s thesis submitted by student Ruaa Raad Tawfiq Mohammed, titled: Challenges in Translating Football Idiomatic Expressions in Spanish Sports Journalism into Arabic. The study aimed to shed light on the major linguistic, cultural, and semantic challenges faced by translators when rendering football‑related idiomatic expressions from Spanish into Arabic, in addition to analyzing the strategies used to handle such challenges.
The findings revealed that many sports idioms are tied to cultural specificities and linguistic metaphors that cannot be conveyed through literal translation. This necessitates the use of various approaches such as functional equivalence, cultural adaptation, and reformulation to ensure accurate meaning transfer.
At the conclusion of the defense, the study recommended strengthening academic training in sports translation and developing specialized dictionaries for sports terminology. The thesis was accepted with the grade “Pass.”
