Master’s Thesis at the College of Languages Investigates Verbal Communication among American and Iraqi Children with Down Syndrome

The Department of English at the College of Languages, University of Baghdad, discussed the master’s thesis entitled “A Cognitive-Pragmatic Analysis of Verbal Communication among American and Iraqi Children with Down Syndrome” submitted by Hardan Mohammed Mousa.

The thesis aimed to analyze verbal communication among children with Down syndrome from a cognitive-pragmatic perspective by comparing two groups of children, one American and the other Iraqi, aged between eight and twelve years.

The findings revealed that American children outperformed their Iraqi counterparts in grammar, semantics, cohesion, contextual language use, and communication initiation. No statistically significant difference was found in pronunciation, while formulaic language was the only domain in which Iraqi children achieved higher scores.

The examination committee recommended accepting the thesis after the required revisions were completed within a period not exceeding one month.
