Master’s Thesis on Surveillance and Power in Postmodern British Theatre

The Department of English at the College of Languages, University of Baghdad, examined the master’s thesis titled “Specters of Power and Surveillance Forces in Selected Postmodern British Plays,” submitted by Mustafa Mohammed Jaafar.

The thesis focused on the transformation of surveillance from its traditional forms to digital mechanisms and its relationship with personal freedom. The study argues that as individuals’ digital activity increases, their sphere of freedom diminishes under the constraints of the digital realm. The research traced the theoretical roots of surveillance, beginning with Jeremy Bentham’s Panopticon, followed by Michel Foucault’s analysis of surveillance as a model for understanding power and discipline in modern society.

The committee recommended accepting the thesis after making the necessary revisions.
