Master’s Thesis Defence on Cyberbullying Discourse Analysis in English and Arabic Social Media

The Department of English at the College of Languages, University of Baghdad, held the defence of the master’s thesis titled “A Critical Social Discourse Analysis of Cyberbullying in English and Arabic Social Media,”* submitted by the student Ruaa Aqeel Abdul-Majeed.

The thesis aimed to examine cyberbullying discourse in political posts on the platform X in both English and Arabic, adopting a critical social discourse analysis perspective. The study focused on identifying the linguistic and visual strategies that shape cyberbullying discourse, as well as tracing representations of power relations and underlying ideological structures embedded in bullying expressions within the digital political sphere.

The researcher employed Norman Fairclough’s (2001) model of Critical Discourse Analysis, alongside the visual grammar framework of Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen (2006), to analyze discourse at textual, contextual, and socio-cognitive levels. The study also highlighted similarities and differences between English and Arabic cyberbullying discourse within political communication on X.

At the conclusion of the defense, the committee recommended accepting the thesis after making the required revisions.
