Master’s Thesis Explores Psychological Dimensions of Displacement and Diaspora in English Drama
The Department of English at the College of Languages, University of Baghdad, held the defense of the master’s thesis titled “The Psychological Dimensions of Displacement: Exploring Diaspora and Identity in Selected Contemporary English Plays,”* submitted by Ahmed Shaker Mahmood.
The thesis examined the crisis of displacement and its psychological impact on migrants and refugees. The study argues that migration is not merely a physical crossing of borders but a psychological journey of adaptation and reconstruction. Identity becomes central to this process, compelling migrants to seek new spatial and psychological belonging. The thesis analyzed three English plays, each addressing a distinct aspect of identity formation under displacement.
The study drew on interdisciplinary theories, including Berry’s (1992) Acculturation Theory, Proshansky et al.’s (1983) Place Identity Theory, and Balaev’s (2018) Theory of Multidimensional Trauma.
The committee recommended accepting the thesis after making the required revisions.
