Opening Ceremony for Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Week at the College of Languages
Under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Ali Adnan Mashwash, Dean of the College of Languages, the Ceremony activities of the Guidance Week were launched on Sunday, November 24, 2024, in alignment with the directives from the Ministry and the University. This event, organized by the Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Unit, encompasses a series of activities designed to raise awareness about mental health culture, address societal risks linked to negative phenomena, and examine the behavior of university students within the academic environment.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Dean’s assistants, heads of academic departments, faculty members, staff, students, and experts in psychological and educational counseling. In his speech, the Dean highlighted the crucial role of the psychological counseling and educational guidance committees in fostering students’ mental well-being, which, in turn, has a positive influence on their academic performance.
One of the key events during the week was an awareness seminar titled “Homosexuality in Contemporary Reality and Its Consequences from the Perspective of Religion and Law.” The seminar, led by Prof. Dr. Shaima Abdel Aziz Abdel Hamid, Professor of Educational Psychology at Ibn Rushd College of Education, aimed to educate attendees on the dangers of homosexuality, its negative social impact, and how to address deviant ideas that are incompatible with the values of Iraqi society. The seminar prompted numerous student inquiries and concluded with several recommendations, including the establishment of awareness and educational centers, as well as the provision of employment opportunities for young people.
In addition to the seminar, the Guidance Week featured a photo exhibition and an awareness campaign highlighting the physical and psychological harms of drugs and smoking. The event also included an environmental initiative titled “Preserving the Environment is Everyone’s Responsibility,” where faculty members and students participated in planting perennial trees, flowers, and roses in the college gardens. Furthermore, the week’s activities showcased the key programs and accomplishments of the Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Unit for the academic year 2023-2024.
