A Cultural Day at the College of Languages Brings Together Francophonie and Artificial Intelligence
The Department of French Language organized its annual Cultural Day on February 27, 2025, in the presence of a delegation from the French Embassy, along with a gathering of students and professors, to celebrate Francophonie in the age of Artificial Intelligence.
The event opened with a speech by the Dean of the College, Prof. Dr. Ali Adnan Mushoush, who spoke about the importance of the French language in today’s world. He announced that a Master’s program in French Literature will soon be introduced and emphasized the College’s commitment to sustaining cultural and academic cooperation with the French Institute and the French Embassy to equip students with more skills.
Following that, Ms. Christine Gourgeau, representative of the French Embassy and linguistic and educational attaché, delivered a speech in which she stressed the importance of strengthening cultural ties between Iraq and France. She was followed by Mr. Samuel Mim, Director of the French Institute in Baghdad, who highlighted the vital role of the College of Languages and the French Department in promoting cultural understanding. Then, the Head of the French Department, Prof. Dr. Sudad Anwar Mohammed, gave a welcome speech in which she praised the efforts of the students and faculty members.
The celebration began with a display of photographs documenting the renovation and rehabilitation phases of the French Department building. Student Mo’mel then recited a poem by Iraqi poet Badr Shakir al-Sayyab, translated into French under the supervision of Asst. Prof. Dr. Noor Hamed, adding a unique literary touch to the event.
The celebration also featured a variety of artistic performances, including songs, poems, and theatrical scenes presented by students under the supervision of faculty members, showcasing their talents and creativity in expressing French culture.
As part of the Francophonie discussions, the event highlighted the importance of the French language in the era of artificial intelligence and explored how AI can contribute to enhancing French language learning and facilitating access to cultural resources, opening new horizons for students.
The French Department has also organized an art exhibition displaying visual representations of the impact of artificial intelligence on the French language and artistic culture.
At the end of the event, photos were taken with faculty members and students, marking this cultural day as a memorable occasion for the department.
