Master’s Thesis Discusses Conflict of Interest in Satirical Political Poetry

The College of Languages – University of Baghdad discussed a Master’s thesis entitledA Critical-Discourse Stylistic Analysis of Conflict of Interest in English and Arabic Satirical Political Poetry by Hussein Yassin Ahmed.

The study aimed to provide a new perspective on the meaning conveyed by poems, helping readers understand the meaning transmitted by poetic language. It also sought to explore potential differences in the portrayal of conflicting interests in English and Arabic political poetry.

Furthermore, the thesis aimed to identify the concept of satire as a critical tool used in political critique within poetry written in both languages. It included an analysis and comparison of the stylistic and linguistic features used in satirical poetry when addressing the issue of conflicting interests among societal classes. It presented the theoretical background related to Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) in general and its relationship to investigating the stylistic aspects of the text. This was based on an eclectic model combining Fairclough’s three-dimensional model and Leech and Short’s model of stylistic analysis to analyze selected poems.

Moreover, the thesis concluded that it is possible to study how cultural and political variables influence the evolution of satirical poetry over time. Additionally, it provided an analysis of changes in the use of rhetorical devices among different generations of poets. It also recommended the necessity of promoting the balanced use of these rhetorical devices in satirical texts to facilitate the delivery of critical messages to the reader.

The committee recommended the researcher to consider the comments made by the members, and the thesis was accepted with a “Satisfactory” grade.
