College of Languages discusses a master’s thesis defense on ambiguity in David Gascoigne’s poetry
The English Language Department at the College of Languages University of Baghdad discussed the master’s thesis defense entitled (Exploring the Mysterious Worlds in Selected Poems of David Gascoigne) by Hanan Abdul Zaid Abboud Ali.
The thesis aimed to provide critical reflection and emotional insight into the poems of the British poet David Gascoyne by exploring the ambiguity surrounding his poetic style. It also included a comprehensive analysis of the development of Gascoyne’s poetic journey through three poetic paths: surrealism, religion and spirituality, and existentialism and transcendence. The poems were analyzed by applying a three dimensional theoretical framework that includes dream theory, aesthetic theory, and existential theory.
The thesis concluded that the idea of ambiguity and mystery in Gascoigne’s poems stems from the ambiguity of the human psyche, which refuses to reveal its true feelings and fears due to societal restrictions or religious traditions. The research committee recommended that the comments made by the committee members be taken into account, and the thesis was accepted with a “complete” grade.
