College of Languages discusses a master’s thesis on the impact of cultural context in shaping visual language
On Sunday, August 24, 2025, the Department of English at the College of Languages, University of Baghdad, held a discussion for the master’s thesis titled “A Socio-Semiotic Study of Selected American and Iraqi Sculptures” by graduate student Noor Qasim Mahmoud.
The thesis aimed to identify and analyze semiotic elements that intentionally convey meaning in selected sculptures from the United States and Iraq, revealing how visual symbols express multiple layers of values. It also conducted a comparative analysis between each American sculpture and its Iraqi counterpart, focusing on these semiotic elements and highlighting how cultural context influences the formation of visual language. The committee recommended the researcher to consider the feedback provided by the members during the discussion.
