Asst. Prof. Ibtihal Mahdi Abdul Karim, Ph.D., a teaching staff member in the Department of English- College of Languages, University of Baghdad, participated in the 16th International Scientific Conference by presenting a paper entitled “An Assessment of the Translation of Islamic Religious Terms “Halal and Haram” in the Holy Quran”, which was held in Turkey – Antalya for the period from 26 to 29 November 2023. The paper presented an assessment of the translation of the terms “Hala and Haram” in the Glorious Quran by six translators, namely Bickthal, Yusuf Ali, Shaker, Muhammad Sarwar, Mohsen Khan and Arberry, and showed how they translated these terms, with the aim to find the most accurate equivalent in terms of meaning. The paper followed a selective approach depending on the context as a clue to arrive at the intended meaning. One of the recommendations proposed in the paper is that translators should have had read books of exegeses of the Holy Qur’an to arrive at the exact and appropriate equivalent of the terms halal and haram, along with recommending the use of the strategy of literal translation and interpretation. Approximately 86 researchers from 11 countries (including Tunisia, Algeria, Iraq, Kuwait, Egypt and Turkey) participated in the conference, and there were two sessions in person and a virtual session (online).
