Asst. Prof. Dr. Ali Adnan Mashwash, Dean of the College of Languages, received in his office on Thursday, April 18, 2024, Professor Dr. Musa Yildiz, President of the Turkish Gazi University. While meeting, representatives from both universities deliberated ways to strengthen ties, maintain open lines of contact with Gazi University in Turkey, and explore new avenues of collaboration between the University of Baghdad and the Turkish Gazi University.
During his visit, Dr. Yildiz met with professors and staff from the Turkish Language Department, led by Dr. Necdet Yasher, Head of the Department. Dr. Yildiz spoke highly of the Turkish Language Department in the College of Languages / University of Baghdad, praising its exceptional work in teaching Turkish and the support and cooperation the university’s presidency and the college’s deanship have extended to Turkish universities.
During a meeting with several students from the department, the president of the Turkish University vowed to encourage them to do their best academically and to arrange for Iraqi students to visit Turkey. Meanwhile, after inspecting the current collection, the president of Gazi University donated his book—which compares and contrasts the Arabic and Turkish languages—to the department library.
The College of Languages Dean handed a memorial shield representing the University of Baghdad and the College of Languages to the President of Gazi University. It is worth mentioning that Gazi University (in Turkish: Gazi Üniversitesi) is a Turkish public university located in the Turkish capital, Ankara. It was established in 1926 by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk (the Republic of Turkey’s founding father) under the Gazi Teacher Training Institute. In 1982, it merged with some other academies and colleges to become a university. Today, Gazi University has 15 colleges, 9 vocational colleges of higher education, 26 research centers, and 6 postgraduate institutes.
The College of Languages highlights the value of language learning and its role in attaining sustainable development objectives by supporting cultural activities that guarantee high-quality education. In keeping with the principles of Goal 17 of the Sustainable Development Goals (concluding partnerships to achieve goals) through cooperative efforts between academia, governments, and other sectors, the College of Languages, in the presence of Professor Dr. Musa Yildiz of Turkish Gazi University, college stuff, and students, highlights the importance of cooperation and partnerships among different segments of society.
