The master’s thesis entitled “Basic Concepts of Russian and Arabic Derivation and the Foundations of Translating Derivatives “Diminutive Formulas as a Model” has been discussed in the Department of Russian Language at the University of Baghdad’s College of Languages of the student Noura Abdul Karim Al-Bahadli .
The thesis aims to analyze and compare the foundations of derivation and translation of the diminutive noun in the Arabic and Russian languages because of the role of the Contrastive linguistics as a significant impact on enhancing scientific research. This was the foundation around which the thesis’s goals were created. The thesis was composed of an introduction, two chapters, and a conclusion that also contained the researcher’s findings.
The thesis included a thorough examination of the fundamental ideas of derivation, which are crucial for understanding the derivational structure, which is the illuminating structure of the semantic structure. It also demonstrated structural differences that have a significant impact on illuminating linguistic patterns and morphological weights, which are a constant criterion in derivation.
In order to arrive at the semantic structure and semantic equivalence on three fundamental aspects, the researcher classified the translation foundations used in disclosing the derivational structure. The first is a semantic basis based on Ibn Faris and Vinokur’s notion of derivational reasoning; the second is a structural basis that highlights the significance of the Arabic and Russian roots; and the third is a perceptual basis that determines which translational equivalent to use. It displays the morphological weight from which the diminutive term was derived as well as the perceptual foundation on which the vocabulary is differentiated in accordance with specific cognitive traits.
The discussion committee was formed from the teachers:
Professor Dr. Ali Abdel Moneim Al-Araji, (chairman)
Assistant Professor Dr. Samer Akram Hussein, Member
Assistant Professor Hikmat Jawad Abdullah, Member
Professor Dr. Rahim Ali Karam,  supervisor
