On Wednesday, April 17, 2024, the Information and Governmental Communication Division, in cooperation with the Human Rights Unit at the College of Languages ​​at the University of Baghdad, organized an academic seminar entitled (The Role of Institutions in Reducing Religious, intellectual, and moral extremism) with the participation of  Dr. Arwa Fakhri Abdul Latif, Director of the Human Rights Unit, Dr. Sanaa Khada Karam, a lecturer in the Human Rights Unit, Dr. Suhad Adnan Jaloub, a lecturer in the Information and Governmental Communication Division, and with the presence of a number of faculty, staff, and students

The seminar aimed to introduce the concept of extremism, its types, its causes, and its negative effects on society in general and university youth in particular.

The seminar also emphasized the role of educational institutions in reducing extremism by fortifying students from a young age against deviant ideas, including extremism. This would happen with the cooperation of other institutions, starting with the family, the media, society, and the private sector, in confronting this foreign phenomenon. The seminar addressed the role of university youth in combating intellectual extremism by emphasizing the importance of science, culture, and knowledge in building a generation that is aware of the importance of confronting the challenges created by extremist thought and violent beliefs and ideas.

The lecturers also emphasized the role of media campaigns in guidance and counseling, through the role of media in awareness, guidance and counseling, because of its great role in raising awareness and guidance against the phenomenon of extremism, based on influential and convincing methods by presenting special programs to inform the recipient about the seriousness of this phenomenon.

At the conclusion of the seminar, the lecturers recommended emphasizing the role of education because it is one of the important entry points that can be invested efficiently in confronting the phenomenon of extremism and intellectual terrorism that has invaded many societies and has become a threat to the security and stability of countries and the necessity of guiding university youth through spreading values ​​that encourage moderation and respect for different opinions. The media, including social media platforms, must also develop awareness and educational programs to combat the spread of extremist ideology.
