The College of Languages Organizes a Lecture Shedding Light on the Rights of People with Disabilities and their Needs in Society
On Sunday, January 12, 2025, the Media and Government Communication Department at the College of Languages at the University of Baghdad organized a lecture entitled “Defining the Rights of People with Disabilities”, in which Prof. Dr. Shaima Abdul Aziz from the College of Education-Ibn Rushd lectured, in the presence of the Dean Assistants for Scientific Affairs and Students, a number of professors, employees, and students of the college.
The lecture aimed to intensify media efforts to shed light on people with disabilities and define their rights guaranteed by Iraqi law, and to raise awareness of the importance of the rules that must be followed when dealing with this segment.
During the lecture, attendees intervened regarding the necessity of addressing individuals with special needs in a manner that promotes their participation in university life without discrimination from their peers, and emphasized the importance of including specialists in psychological disciplines within the guidance units.
At the end of the lecture, the researcher suggested a number of ways to help people with special needs become more integrated into society.
These included making housing and public roads more accessible to them, creating educational curricula using the Braille system to help with reading and memorization, including lessons on people with special needs’ rights and how to treat them with respect, and calling for a digital transformation by creating an electronic reading system that can turn spoken language into written text and vice versa.
This would make it easier for this group to print their answers on tests and do their daily tasks.
