The college of Languages discusses a Master’s thesis in English
The English Department at the College of Languages at Baghdad University discussed the master’s thesis of the student Haider Qais Mohammed Oklah, titled “A Critical Discourse Analysis of the Argumentative Aspect in English and Arabic Parliamentary Debates” on Wednesday, December 4, 2024. The study aimed to conduct a critical discourse analysis of parliamentary debates in both English and Arabic, focusing on the argumentative nature of these discussions and the political motives of parliament members. It also explored differences in persuasion strategies used in both contexts, hypothesizing that English parliamentary debates are characterized by greater persuasion and adherence to dialogical standards. In contrast, Arabic debates tend to be more argumentative and conflictual. The researcher found that members of the English parliament adopted positive stances in their discussions, showing a commitment to dialogical standards and using direct communication methods marked by politeness and respect.
In contrast, the study showed that members of the Arab parliament often resorted to relatively negative stances, violating some dialogical rules and using strategies such as ambiguity and evasion to achieve their goals. The study also revealed that a higher frequency of verbal conflicts characterized Arabic parliamentary debates during dialogue. At the end of the discussion, the committee members provided feedback on the thesis. They recommended that the researcher consider these comments to enrich the work and achieve the required scientific accuracy. The committee decided to accept the thesis and award the student a master’s degree in English. The discussion committee consisted of:
Prof. Riyadh Khalil Ibrahim, Chairman Prof.
Naseer Abbas Ghaban, Member Assoc.
Prof. Dhu al-Fiqar Hussein Muhyi, Member Prof.
Rehab Abdul Jalil Saeed Kadhim, Supervisor.
